Man charged following EDL protest in Newcastle

A man has been charged with common assault following an English Defence League demonstration in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police said a man was hurt during the protest at Grey's Monument on 4 June after firecrackers went off.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with common assault and a public order offence. He will appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on 28 June.

Police said a 45-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of affray and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
