Fire at Hexham flat leaves woman critically ill

A 56-year-old woman is in a critical condition after being rescued by firefighters from a top floor flat in Northumberland after a fire started.

Fire crews were called to Market Place, in Hexham, at 01:15 BST.

The woman was taken to hospital where her condition was described as critical but stable. Six other people were evacuated from adjoining buildings.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Four Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service crews were involved in the rescue along with an aerial platform from the Tyne and Wear service.
