Sunderland A19 crash leaves man in 'critical' condition

A 24-year-old man is in a "critical" condition after a three-vehicle crash on the A19 in Sunderland.

A Ford Ka collided with a lorry travelling south on the A19 near its junction with the A690 on Sunday night.

Smoke from the truck was drifting across the carriageway when the Ka was struck by a Mitsubishi 4x4.

A 24-year-old man who was in the Ka was critically injured and two other men, aged 27 and 22, were also hurt.

The road was closed for about seven hours to remove the vehicles and to carry out and investigation.
