Firefighters who have been fighting a large blaze at a wood recycling plant on Teesside for more than 24 hours have declared it "under control."

Cleveland Fire Service said thousands of tonnes of wood were destroyed in the fire at the Jigsaw plant in Haverton Hill Road, Port Clarence.

A spokesman said there were no reports of injuries and they would be at the scene for several days.

At its height, 10 fire crews were tackling the blaze.

Nearby residents are still being warned to keep their windows closed because of thick, lingering smoke.

Spokesman for the fire service, Barry Waller, said four crews were pumping water directly out of the River Tees to dampen the fire which broke out on Saturday morning.
