Plan to revamp historic Smith's Dock shipyard in North Shields

North Tyneside Council will consider the plans, which include new homes, a park, shops and cafes

Plans have been unveiled which could breathe new life into a former historic shipbuilding site on Tyneside.

Property group People for Places has submitted a £140m plan to build 800 homes at Smith's Dock, North Shields.

North Tyneside Council will consider the plans, which also include a waterfront park, shops and cafes, soon.

Smith's Dock opened in 1851 and was a major part of the Tyne's shipbuilding industry. It was later used as a ship repair yard and closed in the 1990s.

The site has become derelict in recent years, but People for Places has pledged to retain the historic docks as a major element of the proposed development.

Project director Nigel Brewer said: "The planning application marks an important new phase in the history of Smiths Dock. This is the start of its revival, where the site will, once again, become a destination for local people to live, work and socialise.

"Over the coming years the redevelopment of Smiths Dock will generate hundreds of new jobs, apprenticeships as well training opportunities for young people."

Places for People bought the derelict site in 2007 and has already spent £20m on cleaning up the area.
