Pensioners arrested over Judith Richardson murder

Posters are being displayed in Hexham and Newcastle

Two people arrested over the murder of a 77-year-old Northumberland woman are themselves pensioners.

Judith Richardson was found in her home in Hexham on Friday afternoon, where police said she had been the victim of a "brutal attack".

It has emerged a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s have been arrested and questioned. Both have now been bailed.

Police were alerted when Mrs Richardson's handbag was found dumped in a waste bin in Newcastle.

Shoppers and bus users have been asked to help trace the last movements of Mrs Richardson, who lived in St Wilfrid's Road, Hexham.

Posters are being displayed in Hexham where she shopped and in Newcastle, where her handbag was found.

Det Ch Insp Paul Young who is leading the murder investigation, said Miss Richardson left her home on Friday morning and went shopping to Tesco and Aldi in Hexham. She then drove back to her home.

Between 13:00 BST and 16:30 BST a bag belonging to her was left in a bin outside the Mind charity shop on Clayton Street, Newcastle.

Shortly afterwards Miss Richardson's body was found.

Mr Young added: "We are putting posters up around Hexham and Newcastle which will hopefully bring forward more witnesses with potentially vital information.

"We are still keen to establish how a bag believed to have been taken from Miss Richardson's property was found in a bin outside a charity shop in Newcastle on Friday afternoon.

"Anyone who used any public transport from Hexham to Newcastle on Friday and may have seen anything suspicious should contact us."
