Bravery awards after Newcastle fire rescue

A father and son who led their neighbour to safety when a fire started in her Newcastle home are to receive bravery awards.

Alan Smith, 49, and his son Karl, 20, from Cowgate, were alerted to the fire in August by a smoke alarm.

They entered the smoke-filled property, found the woman and guided her downstairs.

They will receive Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority's Bravery and Meritorious Conduct Award on Monday.

Authority chairman Tom Wright said: "There is no doubt that without Alan and Karl's bravery the lady could have died.

"I am extremely proud to present them both with their awards and would like to thank them personally for their courageous actions."
