A man suffered multiple wounds when he was shot as he stood in the garden of his County Durham house.

Durham Police said several shots were fired after vehicles pulled up outside the 56-year-old victim's home in Wingate, near Peterlee, on Monday.

The man was taken to hospital, although police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

A force spokesman said two men aged 24 and 27, were later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Ch Insp Andy Huddleston added "Our initial investigations lead us to believe the shooting was a planned and targeted attack. We do not believe there is a wider risk to the public at this time.

"Further arrests are likely and we are conducting house to house inquiries, reviewing CCTV footage and conducting forensic examinations.

"Whilst this is shocking, incidents of this nature are thankfully rare in County Durham and our neighbourhood officers will be in the community passing this message on."
