Smoke warning over Bishop Auckland tractor tyre fire

Tyre fire Clouds of thick smoke can be seen for miles

Hundreds of tractor tyres have caught fire at a farm in County Durham.

The blaze broke out at Little Gordon Farm, Lands Bank, near Bishop Auckland earlier. About 500 tyres are involved, with an estimated value of £200,000.

More than 40 fire crews and six appliances are at the scene, along with officials from the Environment Agency.

People living in the area have been advised to keep their doors and windows shut owing to the thick smoke, which can be seen from miles around.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "The crews have worked hard to save the farm house from the fire.

"Their response was made very challenging due to water supplies in this very rural location, which is a long way from the hydrant.

"The crews have worked hard to overcome this initial difficulty and have worked quickly and effectively to bring this large fire under control."
