World War One medals recovered after Bishop Auckland theft

Two World War One medals stolen from the window of a County Durham charity shop have been handed in to police.

The British Service Medal and Victory Medal were taken from a commemorative display at the YMCA store in Bishop Auckland on Saturday, when a member of staff was distracted with a customer.

Following an appeal, a member of the public later came forward to report having purchased them.

Durham Police said it was working to identify who had taken them.

They will be returned to the owner - the grandfather or the husband of Janice Collinson, the store manager - in due course.

Mrs Collinson had previously described the theft of the "prized possessions" as "dreadful and upsetting".
