A man accused of murdering a 20-year-old woman has died in prison.

Dawit Khasay, 19, was due to appear at Teesside Crown Court, charged over the death of Natsnet Tekle Nahisi in Middlesbrough earlier this month.

Mr Khasay was being held at HMP Holme House in Stockton-on-Tees, but died at some point over the weekend.

Nahisi, who is thought to be originally from Eritrea in the Horn of Africa, was found dead in a house on Parliament Road on 3 May.

Cleveland Police said they were contacted at 06:30 BST on Sunday following the death of a 19-year-old inmate at Holme House.

The force said a post-mortem examination would be carried out, but the death was not being treated as suspicious.
