A windsurfer rescued after getting into difficulties on the Teesside coast has died.

Both lifeboats from Redcar RNLI were called out just after 14:00 BST on Friday.

A member of the public had reported seeing a kitesurfer attempting to bring the man to shore while trying to resuscitate him.

Two RNLI crew members got into the sea, brought the windsurfer to the shore and continued resuscitation.

The man was taken to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, but he has died.

"Our condolences go to his family and friends and our thoughts are with everyone involved in this sad event," an RNLI spokesman said.
