A man who had his penis severed in an attack on Teesside has been "assisting" officers attempting to establish how he came about his injuries.

The 40-year-old, who has not been named, remains in a stable condition in hospital after being found on the A66 in Middlesbrough early on 13 March.

After coming out of an induced coma, he was "too distressed" to speak to detectives until after the weekend.

A 22-year-old man arrested over the attack remains on bail.

Cleveland Police has appealed for any witnesses who have not come forward to do so.

A spokeswoman said: "Specially trained officers have visited the man on a number of occasions since his admittance to hospital and have spoken to him about his injuries and how he has come about them.

"He is engaging with these officers and is assisting them as he continues to undergo treatment and begin recovery."

    15:33: Icy road warning

    Cleveland Police have reminded people to take care on icy roads after three cars overturned on the roads this morning.

    There were accidents on Low Lane near the Sporting Lodge, on the A689 near Sappers Corner in Hartlepool and just after midday on the Hollywood Bowl Car Park at Teesside Park.

    None of the drivers or passengers were seriously injured.

    Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has avoided commenting on reports that he could become the new Crystal Palace manager.

    Palace sacked Neil Warnock on Saturday after four months in charge with the side in the relegation zone.

    A man is critically ill in hospital after being seriously assaulted on Christmas Day in Skelton.

    The 49-year-old was attacked at about 06:10 on Thursday on Hylton Avenue.

    Members of the public tried to intervene to help the man who had "significant" head injuries. Police said he remains in a critical condition in James Cook University Hospital.

    Three men, aged 29, 30 and 51, have been arrested and bailed on suspicion of assault.

    A legal challenge has been launched against Durham Tees Valley Airport - over plans to build a new wind turbine near the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough.

    An objection from the airport's owners had claimed it would cause safety concerns for aircrafts.

    Newcastle recorded their first league win in four games as they beat out-of-form Everton at St James' Park.

    It was the Toffees' fourth league loss in five matches, although they made the ideal start when Arouna Kone fired in.

    Papiss Cisse swept home to level from Mike Williamson's pull-back, before Ayoze Perez drove in from 18 yards.

    Jack Colback then pounced on Ross Barkley's mistake to poke home the third before Kevin Mirallas set up a tense finale with a clipped finish.

    East Coast Trains says passengers travelling to and from London from the North East should have an easier journey today after a weekend of long delays and disruption.

    Over-running engineering work meant Kings Cross was closed on Saturday causing chaos at Finsbury Park where trains were terminating.

    Kings Cross did reopen yesterday, but passengers reported that trains were packed, with many people having to stand for their whole journey to the North East.

    Last night trains heading north were delayed further by a broken-down train at Berwick.

    A woman is still in hospital three days after having part of her ear bitten off in a Boxing Day attack in a Newcastle nightclub.

    Police said the 19-year-old was set upon during a disturbance in the Riverside Club just after 23:40.

    Officers discovered her with part of her ear missing and she was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

    The club was busy at the time of the attack and Northumbria Police is appealing for witnesses.

    A man is in hospital following a three vehicle crash on the A19 in North Yorkshire yesterday.

    The road was closed southbound between Stokesley and Osmotherley following the collision at 11:00.

    The 35-year-old had to be cut from his car before being given life support by paramedics.

    A kayaker was rescued by a RNLI Lifeboat from Cullercoats after his boat took on water yesterday.

    The man was found by his rescuers in the water next to his kayak which had been damaged in the sea swell.

    He suffered some cuts and bruises from being thrown out of his kayak.

    Campaigners fighting to save Newcastle Turkish Baths have been given "new hope" that it could reopen, thanks to a £10,000 grant.

    Since its closure, the Re-open Newcastle Turkish Baths Group has been campaigning to save it.
