A man who had his penis severed in an attack two days ago is well enough to be questioned by police.

The 40-year-old, from South Bank, Teesside, was found deeply "distressed" on the A66 in Middlesbrough on Thursday and was put into an induced coma.

Cleveland Police said he regained consciousness yesterday and will be interviewed later in hospital by detectives.

A man arrested on suspicion of assault has been bailed.

The road, from Greystones Roundabout to Church Lane in Middlesbrough, where the victim was found, was shut for several hours while a search was carried out.

A police spokeswoman said: "Detectives continue to investigate how a man who was found on the A66 in the early hours of Thursday came by his serious injuries.

"Officers are visiting him in hospital again today in the hope that he may be able to provide information."
