County Durham man killed when car hits tree on A688

A man was killed when his car left the road and hit a tree in County Durham.

The crash happened on the A688 Staindrop Road in West Auckland at 18:45 GMT on Friday.

Durham Police believe the car was travelling north towards Bishop Auckland at the time.

The male driver, who is from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene, said police. The female passenger was taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.
