A renovated fire station said to be at the "heart of the community" has opened on Teesside.

The original fire station on Seaton Carew Road opened in 1972, when Cleveland Fire Brigade was known as Teesside Fire Brigade.

Now, after an extensive renovation, Billingham Community Fire Station now "meets the needs" of a modern fire service, Cleveland Fire Brigade said.

Chief fire officer Ian Hayton, said it was an "exciting development".

The site now houses specialist equipment to deal with incidents at nearby petro-chemical sites.
