A £20m teaching and conference centre is being planned by Teesside University at the heart of its Middlesbrough campus.

Planning consent for the building, which will be built opposite the Dickens Inn on Southfield Road, is now being sought.

In recent years the university has invested £150m in the Middlesbrough campus.

The new building will contain offices and teaching space.

Chief executive of the university Professor Graham Henderson said: "This development will not just benefit our students, our neighbours and the people of the town.

"It will also offer new facilities that contribute to the economy of the region and enhance the profile of Middlesbrough, so we can continue to attract the best new students and staff and engage fully with employers and investors."
