Hand grenade detonated on Seaton Carew beach

Bomb disposal experts have detonated a World War II hand grenade that was found on a Teesside beach.

A Hartlepool Borough Council worker found the grenade encased in rock near the Rocket House car park at Seaton Carew at about 09:50 BST.

The grenade was missing its safety devices and was detonated by experts, called in from Catterick, within a cordon at the low tide line.

Cleveland Police said cordons have been removed and the beach has reopened.
