A man seen punching a police horse during clashes after the Tyne-Wear derby in Newcastle, has claimed that the attack was not premeditated.

Speaking in April, Barry Rogerson, of Hartlands, Bedlington, said he was acting in self-defence, claiming the Yorkshire Police horse, called Bud, was bolting towards him.

The 45-year-old unemployed factory manager said he panicked and did not intend to injure the animal.

Rogerson admitted violent disorder and will be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on 24 October.
