Teesside and County Durham schools hit by icy conditions

A dozen schools across Teesside and County Durham have been forced to close because of the continuing bad weather.

The Guisborough and East Durham areas have been worst affected, although most major road and rail routes are open.

A section of A66 at Middlesbrough's Hartington Interchange is closed due to a collapsed manhole.

Liam Stafford, 16, from Middlesbrough, remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after he hit a tree while out sledging on Sunday.

The teenager was hurt near Flatts Lane Country Park in Normanby and was flown to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance.

Forecasters are predicting that snow and high winds will ease by Tuesday night.
