A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after an explosion at a house in Middlesbrough.

Cleveland Police said the explosion in Carlbury Avenue in Acklam at about 22:30 GMT on Monday was being treated as suspicious.

Resident Nik Dark said: "I just heard a massive boom, it sounded like a gas leak."

The house suffered fire damage but neighbouring houses were not affected.

No-one was injured.

Police would not say whether the arrested man lived in the house. He remains in custody for questioning.
