Non-profitable bus routes in County Durham will be kept after new deals were agreed.

Contracts worth £3.3m have been awarded for subsidised services in the south, centre and east of the county during a re-tendering process.

These cover routes that would otherwise not operate because they are not economically viable for operators.

Durham County Council said they provided a vital link to small and rural communities.

A further round of tendering for subsidised services in the north and west of the county will take place next year.
