A £200,000 revamp of the parks and gardens of Bowes Museum in County Durham has been officially opened by botanist David Bellamy.

The museum, near Barnard Castle, opened in 1892 and displays furniture, paintings, sculpture and textiles.

The revamp, which includes new woodland walks and play areas, was largely funded by a grant from the County Durham Environmental Trust (CDENT).

Sunday's opening follows a recent £12m makeover of the main museum.

Professor Bellamy has strong links with the area, having lectured at Durham University.
