Three people escaped injury when the plane they were in overshot a runway at Durham Tees Valley Airport due to a bird strike.

Emergency services were alerted when the pilot of the Falcon 20 jet aborted the take-off at the airport near Darlington earlier.

The plane, operated by Cobham Aviation Services, suffered minor damage in the incident.

Air accident investigators have begun an inquiry.

A spokesman for Cobham Aviation Services said: "A bird strike was reported, resulting in an aborted take-off and the aircraft overran the end of the runway.

"The three crew on board were uninjured and the aircraft has sustained some damage.

"We have launched an internal investigation into the incident and are fully cooperating with the airport and with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB), who will also conduct an investigation."

A Durham Tees Valley spokesman said the airport was continuing to operate as normal and there had not been any disruption to services.

Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service sent three appliances to the scene, but a spokesman said they were not needed.
