An Olympic torchbearer who proposed to his pregnant girlfriend as he took part in the relay has become a father.

David State, 25, from Redcar, was carrying the torch in Loftus on 18 June when he asked eight-months pregnant Christine Langham, 27, to be his wife.

Ellie Joan Georgia State was born on 22 July, weighing 7lb 1oz.

The couple said they were "proud to be part" of the Olympic story but opted to not to name their child after the event.

In an interview after the surprise proposal, Ms Langham joked: "I nearly had my baby there and then."

Mr State said: "People have suggested Olympic names for us to use but we had decided on Ellie's name before I'd been a torchbearer so we decided not to change that.

"We have been recognised a few times since the proposal, and since it was shown at the Olympics opening ceremony, people have latched on to the story, saying it's good news, and we're proud to be part of that."
