Cherie Blair opens new women's centres in Middlesbrough

Homeless women and victims of domestic violence can find support at two new centres in Middlesbrough.

The buildings, which are funded by Endeavour Housing Association, were opened by Cherie Blair on Thursday.

Elaine Wilson, team manager at the homeless centre, said women and their children would get full support to allow them to live independently.

Women can stay in the facility for up to two years and get support to pay off debts, access benefits and find work.

Mrs Wilson said: "The ladies and their children that come to us are homeless or under threat of homelessness.

"We give them support with living independently and managing their tenancy."

Staff at the centres can arrange support for those with mental health problems and the women are also given access to courses to improve numeracy and literacy.
