An 81-year-old man found dead at his house in Middlesbrough suffered serious head injuries, police have said.

His body was discovered at the property in Leven Street in Gresham just after 22:50 BST on Monday.

A post-mortem examination showed the man died as a result of a "significant assault", the force said.

Murder detectives have set up an incident room and officers have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.

Cleveland Police said it was attempting to trace the victim's relatives and no name would be released until a formal identification had taken place.

Anyone who was in the area after 17:00 BST on Sunday who saw anything unusual has been urged to contact the force.
