The body of a man has been found at a house in Middlesbrough.

Police were called to Leven Street in Gresham just after 22:50 BST on Monday and cordoned off part of the road. The death is being treated as suspicious.

The house is being examined and a post-mortem examination is due to take place to establish the cause of death.

Cleveland Police has set up an incident room and officers have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.

Temp Det Supt Peter McPhillips said: "He was an elderly man who lived on his own, and had been living there for a number of years.

"We are making inquiries to identify relatives and find out more about his background.

"The post-mortem examination will give us an indication of the cause of death and we can make a decision on what type of investigation we are going to do."

He added: "I am convinced that someone has some information, and I would ask that they come forward."
