A 70-year-old man has been attacked after answering his door to two men armed with a crowbar and a handgun.
Sussex Police said he was hit over the head with the crowbar by the attackers who confronted him on his doorstep in Burgess Hill and demanded money.
The victim also had a handgun pointed at him but the two men ran away when he managed to grab a kitchen knife.
The man was with his wife at the time, but she was unhurt. He was treated in hospital for cuts and bruising.
One of the men in Monday evening's attack in Windmill Drive was described as between 17 and 19 years old, and about 6ft (1.8m) tall with a dark, swarthy complexion.
Both men were described as slim.
