A nine-year-old boy is being treated in hospital after he was injured by a pole in a playground in West Sussex.

The pole was part of the equipment in the play area at the Cherry Lane Adventure Playground in Crawley.

The emergency services were called to the scene just before 13:00 BST on Tuesday, and the boy was airlifted to St George's Hospital, in south London.

Crawley Borough Council, which runs the site, has closed it and said all the equipment would be safety checked.

It said the Health and Safety Executive had been informed and the council would work with officials to establish exactly what happened.

On Wednesday, Sussex Police said the child was in a stable condition in hospital.
