Beaches in Hastings and Lancing are on an Environment Agency list of beaches that might fail to meet new EU bathing standards.

The new rules about safe levels of bacteria from sewage come into force next year.

It is feared the high levels of contamination are from houses where sewers are connected to storm drains.

Hastings Borough Council leader Jeremy Birch said his authority had so far discovered 30 misconnected homes.

He said the authority was considering abandoning its designated bathing beach and creating a new one further along the coast.
