A man has been run over and killed by a police car in East Sussex.

The vehicle, with two officers inside, hit the pedestrian in Hastings at about 19:20 GMT, Sussex Police said.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was struck on White Rock at the junction with Robertson Street.

The officers were responding to a report a car was being driven by a disqualified motorist. The crash has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

A Sussex Police spokesman said officers and paramedics tried to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police officers in the car had not been responding to an emergency call at the time of the accident, he said.

One of the officers was slightly injured.
