Woman, 89, dies after fire in Barcombe Mills

An 89-year-old woman has died in a fire at a house in East Sussex.

Crews forced their way into Mill Farm, in Barcombe Mills, just before 07:00 GMT on Saturday after a member of the public raised the alarm.

They rescued the woman, who has not been named, but despite receiving treatment at the scene she died later.

Det Insp Mark O'Brien, of Sussex Police, said the cause was unexplained and officers remained "open-minded as to how it may have started".

He added that building inspectors had ruled that the premises were structurally unsafe, but fire investigators would remain at the scene for the next couple of days to try to establish the cause of the blaze.
