Crawley residents urged to mark jewellery

Residents in West Sussex are being urged to mark their valuable gold jewellery with a forensic code following a spate of burglaries.

The SelectaDNA kits are being handed out by officers at Crawley police station so that items are more easily identifiable if they are stolen.

As well as a forensic code, visible stickers alert potential thieves that items within the property are marked.

The household and the items are then registered on a database.

'Potential deterrent'

At the end of last year, Sussex Police was criticised by community leaders after more than 40 Asian households were targeted by burglars in the Crawley area.

In each incident, jewellery worth between £1,000 and £30,000 was taken.

District Commander Ch Insp Justina Beeken said as a result, some members of the community were feeling vulnerable.

"I am, however, convinced that by using these kits, together we will make Crawley a more hostile environment for thieves thinking about targeting our town," he said.
