About 50 firefighters have been tackling a blaze which badly damaged a thatched cottage near Arundel.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the incident in the village of Wepham on Wednesday night and were still fighting the fire on Thursday morning.

A spokeswoman said the building's occupier escaped safely without injuries.

She said the cause of the fire was not known and was being investigated.

Crews were alerted by a neighbour at about 19:30 GMT, she said.

It is thought the fire started in the thatched roof, which had since collapsed.

Firefighters were carrying out salvage work to clear items from the house on Thursday.
