A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a woman was found at a house in West Sussex.

The body of the woman, 44, was found at Cherry Tree Cottage on the B2178 in East Ashling, near Chichester, by a colleague who came to take her to work.

Emergency services were called to the house at 07:50 GMT on Monday.

A 45-year-old man from Selsey was arrested on Monday evening on suspicion of murder but police said as yet the cause of death was unexplained.

The man being held in custody was known to the woman.

'Not natural death'

"While initially it was thought that we were dealing with a sudden death, officers became increasingly suspicious of the circumstances," said Det Ch Insp Ian Pollard.

"Our enquiries lead us to believe that this was not a natural death and a murder enquiry has been launched."

Mr Pollard said the last time the woman was seen alive was at home at 12:30 GMT on Sunday.

He appealed for information from anyone who saw her or was in contact with her after that time up until Monday morning.

People were also being asked to come forward if they saw a blue Vauxhall Vectra parked in a small lay-by across the road from Cherry Tree Cottage on Sunday.

Sussex Police said they would not be able to release further information about the inquiry until results of a post mortem examination being held on Tuesday were known.
