Sussex Police: Hove woman conned by bogus gritters

Two men tricked an elderly woman into giving them a blank signed cheque after they offered to grit her steps.

Sussex Police said the pair told the Hove woman, aged 88, they were spreading grit for charity and she agreed to pay them £2 on Saturday.

Shortly afterwards the men returned and convinced her she should give them a blank cheque, police said.

"This was despicable crime against an elderly person," PC Steven Morris said. Police have appealed for information.
