A man has been arrested after a Sussex hospital patient told staff she had been raped by a healthcare worker.

Sussex Police said the incident was reported to have happened between Wednesday and Thursday by a patient in her 20s at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

A 29-year-old Chichester man was being questioned in custody on Friday.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust said the staff member would not be working while the investigation was under way.

'Victim receiving help'

The NHS trust alerted Sussex Police on Thursday afternoon.

Det Ch Insp Dave Wardley-Wilkins said officers were in the early stages of a full investigation.

"The victim is receiving help and support from specially-trained police officers," he added.

The trust said said it was fully with the police enquiry but was unable to make any further comment while the investigation was ongoing.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Sussex Police.
