Police investigating a report of a rape in East Sussex said they were no longer looking for anyone in connection with the allegation.

The 24-year-old local woman reported being raped on steps leading to Lower Park Road in Hastings on Sunday.

Sussex Police said a team of detectives and search-trained officers had been assembled to investigate.

Det Insp Hannah Willard said that after speaking to the woman, police were reviewing the allegation.

"Having undertaken a serious of inquiries to establish the exact circumstances of what was reported, the investigation is no longer looking for anyone in connection with this incident," said a spokeswoman.

Police set up extra patrols in the area following the allegation that the woman was tapped on the shoulder and asked directions by a man who then grabbed and raped her.

Sussex Police said she had briefly set off her personal alarm during the struggle sometime between 19:30 and 20:00 BST.
