A man arrested in Hassocks on suspicion of murder is believed to have known the man he is suspected of killing, Sussex Police have said.

The 27-year-old is being questioned after the 52-year-old's body was found in a flat in Belmont Close.

Officers were called to the property on Thursday after a report of an assault.

Det Ch Insp Nick Sloan said: "We believe the two men were known to each other but detailed background inquiries are still taking place."

The dead man is believed to have been stabbed. A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Friday, police said.

The victim, who is not from Sussex, is thought to have died shortly before the police were called, a police spokesman said.

A knife was taken away for examination and police are continuing a forensic search of the scene.

Det Ch Insp Sloan, from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team, said: "Nobody else was present and there is no risk to anyone else in the area.

"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation."
