The body of Michael Polding, was discovered on Monday in a property in St George's Road.
Mr Polding had moved to the Kemp Town area about nine months ago where he felt more comfortable living as an openly gay man, his family said.
A post-mortem examination on Saturday found he had suffered a number of injuries.
'Kind and caring'Officers were called to the address after being told he had not been seen for a couple of months.
Mr Polding's family said he had grown up in Scotland but moved to London in the 1970s.
In a statement, they said: "Last year he decided to move to Brighton as he wanted to start a new life in the gay community in the city.
"Michael was a kind and caring man. Despite the distance between us he kept in close contact and we will miss him greatly."
