Bracklesham Bay watersports zone removed
A designated watersports zone at a West Sussex beach is to be scrapped after a legal challenge by residents who feared kite surfers were threatening safety.
Bracklesham Bay resident Annie McDonald said: "The whole three-mile stretch of the beach was being used."
The zone was introduced in 2010 after consultation with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa).
Kite surfer James Fitch said it was disappointing as the zone was intended to make it safer for other beach users.
He said: "We haven't had any incidents down here ever involving any third party."
The residents claimed the zone was too near homes where 28 children lived and wanted it moved to the deserted four-mile stretch of beach towards Selsey.
Chichester District Council decided to remove it after residents applied for a judicial review.
"The result of what we have done is to make the council sit up and pay attention to the fact that the Rospa guidelines will not keep the kite surfers in one area," said Ms McDonald.
The council said it had received further legal correspondence and so could not comment.
