Nationalist protesters march through Brighton

March for England in Brighton Eight people were arrested during the march

About 300 people have taken part in a nationalist march in Brighton.

There was a heavy police presence as the group March for England held its fourth annual event.

Sussex Police said a counter-protest was held by opposing groups within the city as protesters made their way to Victoria Gardens for speeches.

Officers said a number of missiles were thrown at the March for England protesters during the event, and eight people were arrested.

Police said most of the arrests were for public order offences.

Police presence

Both groups of protesters gathered at assigned locations outside Brighton railway station at about midday, marching along separate routes, guided by police to Victoria Gardens.

Police said the organisations were able to hold their rallies due to officers maintaining a distance between both groups.

The protest marches then made their way back to Queens Road, eventually dispersing at about 1500 BST.

Supt Steve Whitton said the event had caused minimal disruption to the city, but police would maintain a visible presence during the evening.
