Man's body found in burnt-out vehicle in Climping

The body of a man has been found in a burnt-out vehicle in West Sussex, prompting a police investigation.

Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to the beach at Climping, near Littlehampton, just before 0530 GMT on Thursday.

Local people called 999 after seeing flames coming from the red Rover saloon in Climping Street. There were also reports of an explosion.

Sussex Police said the death was being treated as unexplained at this stage.

"We are in the very early stages of the investigation and are working with the coroner's officer and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to establish the circumstances surrounding this death," said Det Insp Trevor Bates.

Sussex Police said the body was believed to be that of the car owner, a 50-year-old man from Bognor.

A post-mortem examination has yet to be arranged and formal identification has not taken place, a force spokesman said.
