A driver suffered serious head injuries when he was attacked by a cyclist in Hove.

Sussex Police said the 52-year-old was getting out of his car in Portland Road just after noon on Sunday when the incident happened.

They believe the driver may have opened his door, causing a group of three cyclists to swerve out of the way.

One of the cyclists, who was wearing green cargo trousers and had thick stubble, then attacked the driver.

The victim was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and later transferred to Hurstwood Park in Haywards Heath.

A police spokeswoman said the victim remained unconscious but was in a stable condition.
