Pedestrian hurt as car hits supermarket in Brighton

A pedestrian was knocked over after a car left the road in Brighton, hit a supermarket, then careered into a number of recycling bins.

Police said four people in the vehicle ran off following the accident outside Waitrose in Western Road.

A 28-year-old man was injured when he was hit by one of the bins and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with suspected broken ribs.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Police said a 31-year-old from Brighton was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to report an accident and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving and failing to report an accident.

They are being questioned by police.

Western Road eastbound was closed after the crash at about 0730 BST.

A spokesman for Waitrose said the shop window was cracked but not smashed and the shop was open as usual.
