A councillor accused of pretending to be a barrister has been asked to step down from her executive role in charge of planning for Guildford council.

Monika Juneja, 35, from Guildford, was charged last week by Surrey Police under the Legal Services Act.

She is also accused of two fraud offences and three under the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act.

Leader of the Conservatives, Stephen Mansbridge, said she would not be suspended as a councillor by the group.

Mr Mansbridge said he would take charge of the planning on the council and thanked Ms Juneja for her "exceptional service".

Ms Juneja is also charged with obtaining a pecuniary advantage under the Theft Act.

She is due to appear before magistrates in Guildford on 2 September.
