A £1m scheme to replace an ageing water main in Surrey is to start in September.

Sutton and East Surrey Water said some of the three-inch cast iron mains in Betchworth dated back to 1892.

The work would secure supplies for the whole Dorking area, but would see part of Pebble Hill Road closed for four months, the company said.

Project engineer Simon Thomson said the mains pipe was reaching the end of its lifespan.

"Leakage and bursts have become more frequent in recent years," he said.

"We need to carry out this replacement work now to reduce the risk of mains failures."

He said road diversions would be put in place and a dedicated page had been put on the company's website to provide details of the project and road diversions.

The project is due for completion early 2015.
