Bletchingley barn fire 'put drivers at risk'

A suspicious barn fire put motorists' lives at risk as they drove along a Surrey motorway, police said.

Drivers on the M23 in the Bletchingley area at about 01:20 reported smoke from the fire impairing their vision.

The fire in the barn, which was used to store hay, industrial machinery and fuel, caused damage put at £100,000, according to police.

It is being treated as suspicious as there was evidence of trespassers in the area, Surrey Police added.

Det Con David Fair, from Surrey Police, said: "Not only did the offenders cause around £100,000 worth of damage to the barn and items stored in it, they also put the lives of motorists at risk which is completely not acceptable."
