A father-of-two is in hospital with head injuries after being attacked while he walked home with his family.

Surrey Police said the man hit the ground after being punched outside the Old Surrey Hounds pub in Caterham Valley at 23:50 GMT on Saturday.

The man, in his 40s, had approached two men who shouted at him, his wife and two children in the street.

He was taken to East Surrey Hospital at Redhill by ambulance, where he remains in a stable condition.

'Agitated state'

The attackers ran off down Croydon Road in the direction of Commonwealth Road.

Det Con Gemma Scott said: "It is possible those involved returned home in an agitated state or have spoken to someone about their crime.

"If anyone has any suspicions, please call the police as we need to bring these offenders to justice."

The attackers are described as white and stocky, in their 30s, between 5ft 9in to 6ft 2in tall and smartly dressed with short dark hair.
